Cavities, also known as tooth decay, are a common dental issue that occurs when bacteria in your mouth produce acids that eat away at your teeth. If left untreated, cavities can lead to severe toothache, infection, and even tooth loss. That’s why it’s crucial to address them early.
Dental fillings are a common treatment for cavities that work by filling the hole in your tooth, stopping the decay from progressing further. Choosing the right dental filling can help restore your tooth’s function and appearance. It can also prevent further complications and improve your overall oral health.
You’ll find various dental filling options in Oak Park, IL. Each type has its advantages and drawbacks.
Each type of filling has its place, depending on the location and extent of the cavity, your budget, and your personal preferences.
Several factors come into play when choosing a dental filling, and one of the most important is the location of the cavity.
Durability is key for cavities in the back teeth. Amalgam or gold fillings are often the best choices because they can withstand chewing pressure and last for many years.
Aesthetics are more important when it comes to cavities in the front teeth. Composite or ceramic fillings, which your dentist can match to the color of your teeth, are usually the preferred choice.
Cost is another factor to consider. Gold fillings are the most expensive, while amalgam fillings are usually the most affordable.
Your personal health considerations also matter. If you have allergies to certain metals, you’ll want to go with other options.
Finally, your dentist’s recommendation is crucial. They can guide you toward the best choice based on your situation.
Getting a dental filling in Oak Park, IL starts with a thorough oral examination. Your dentist will check for signs of cavities, such as toothache or visible holes.
If your dentist detects a cavity, they will likely recommend an X-ray to help determine the extent of the decay. This is critical to know whether a cavity is all you need, or if a more serious procedure, such as a root canal, is necessary.
Before the procedure begins, local anesthesia is usually administered to ensure a pain-free experience. The dentist then prepares the tooth for the filling by removing the decayed part of the tooth.
The dentist cleans the tooth once the decay is removed to ensure no bacteria or debris is left behind. The dentist then places filling material into the cavity and shapes it to match the contour of the tooth.
After the dentist places the filling, they harden it using a special light.
Finally, the dentist checks your bite and makes any necessary adjustments. This ensures comfort and functionality.
After getting a dental filling, proper care is crucial to ensure its longevity.
Good oral hygiene is key, as regular brushing and flossing can prevent further decay. Avoiding hard or sticky foods can also help, as these can dislodge or damage the filling.
Regular dental checkups are another critical component, as these allow your dentist to monitor the condition of the filling.
If you experience sensitivity or discomfort, contact your dentist, as this could indicate a problem with the filling. Early treatment of a failed filling is instrumental in a successful retreatment.
Finding the right dentist to handle dental fillings near you is crucial, as it ensures you get the best care for your teeth.
To find a great dentist near you, ask for recommendations from friends, family, or coworkers. They can provide valuable insight into the dentists they visit.
Online reviews can also be helpful, as they glimpse other patients’ experiences with the dentist and staff. They also give you a great high-level overview via star ratings.
Consider the dentist’s qualifications and experience. You want a board-certified dentist with many years of successfully treating cavities in Oak Park, IL. You can usually find this information on the dental office’s website.

I FOUND MY TOOTH FAIRIES ON EARTH and it only took my most of my adult life to do it! 😂 I originally found this office from doing a Google search for a dental office that actually had good reviews. I don’t know about you, but most of my experiences at the dental office have been unpleasant. More often than not, I have felt like just another person that fills a chair with no real personal care or plan. Once I saw the great reviews for here- I booked an appointment. That was almost 4 years ago, and I haven’t gone anywhere since! My very first appointment here was probably the best one I’ve ever had at a dentist. I had just came from a dental office where I went with a problem of bleeding gums and all I was told was that there was a mouthwash I would have to use to correct the problem…. Pretty much forever lol and then sent right out the door. It went the complete opposite here though. I first met Dr Diana Barzano and she got me right together……she was so sweet that she even gave me her cell phone number in case I had any questions or issues with my mouth after she got done working on me; I had a lot of issues going on. Despite what I had going on she made me feel super safe and actually cared for. Everyone in the office is an absolute sweetheart and extremely professional and knowledgeable. Dr. Val is another one of my favorites. I started taking my young son there and he loves her too. Although he is only nine, she and everyone else is very hands-on with dealing with him, especially since he can be pretty nervous in the office. I am so glad that I found them and don’t plan on going anywhere else. ❤️
I hate going to the dentist. I literally used to have anxiety about it. But Dr. Welindt and his staff are warm and wonderfully talented people. And he does EXCELLENT work. I’ve been to so many dentists all over the country (I hate going, but I go) and he has been the best. I highly recommend him AND his great staff.
Always on time, with friendly and high quality service—would definitely recommend to friends and family. Dr Welindt and diane are super talented professionals!
